Industries

Industries are top-level organizational containers in Asset Pro. Each industry has its own classification hierarchy, terminology, and attributes.

Understanding Industries

Industry = Distinct asset management domain

Each industry represents a separate business area with:

  • Own classification structure (Type → Category → Model)

  • Custom terminology (Fleet Type, Device Category, Equipment Class)

  • Specific attributes (Cargo Capacity, RAM, Serial Number)

One Asset → One Industry (assets cannot change industries)

Creating an Industry

Access Industries Page

  1. Choose 🔎 icon

  2. Enter Asset Industries

  3. Choose related link

  4. Click New

Required Fields

Code (max 20 characters)

  • Short identifier: FLEET, MEDICAL, IT

  • Uppercase recommended

  • Cannot change after creation

  • Must be unique

Name (max 100 characters)

  • Full descriptive name

  • Examples: "Fleet Management", "Medical Equipment"

  • Can be changed later

Optional Fields

Blocked (checkbox)

  • Prevents creating new assets in this industry

  • Existing assets remain visible

  • Use when phasing out industry

Information Fields

These fields calculate automatically:

Number of Levels

  • Count of classification levels defined

  • Example: 3 (Fleet Type → Vessel Category → Vessel Model)

Number of Values

  • Total classification values across all levels

  • Example: 25 values

Number of Assets

  • Assets using this industry

  • Shows active usage

Example: Creating Fleet Industry

Step-by-step:

  1. Open Asset Industries → New

  2. Code: FLEET

  3. Name: Fleet Management

  4. Blocked: Unchecked

  5. Save

Next steps:

  • Create classification levels (See: Classifications)

  • Create classification values

  • Define attributes (See: Attributes)

  • Create assets

Modifying Industries

Changing Name

  • Can change Name anytime

  • Affects display only

  • Assets remain linked

Blocking Industry

  • Check Blocked box

  • Cannot create new assets in industry

  • Existing assets unaffected

  • Cannot delete blocked industry if assets exist

Deleting Industry

Cannot delete if:

  • Assets exist using this industry

  • Classification values exist

  • Classification levels exist

To delete:

  1. Delete all assets (or move to different industry - manual process)

  2. Delete all classification values

  3. Delete all classification levels

  4. Delete industry

Warning: Deletion is permanent. Consider blocking instead.

Industry vs. Classification

Common confusion:

| Concept

|

Purpose

|

Example

| | --- | --- | --- | |

Industry

|

Separate business domains

|

FLEET vs. MEDICAL

| |

Classification

|

Categorize within industry

|

Commercial → Cargo → Panamax

|

Industry = "What business area?"
Classification = "What type within that area?"

Multi-Industry Organizations

Asset Pro supports multiple industries in one company:

Scenario: Hospital with IT department

  • MEDICAL industry: MRI, CT scanners, X-ray machines

  • IT industry: Computers, servers, network equipment

Each industry has separate:

  • Classification levels (Department/Type vs. Device Type/Model)

  • Attributes (Field Strength vs. RAM/Processor)

  • Terminology

Best Practices

Start with One Industry

  • Create complete structure for one industry first

  • Test with sample assets

  • Add more industries afterward

Use Clear Codes

  • FLEET not FLT (more readable)

  • MEDICAL not MED (avoid confusion)

  • IT not TECH (standard terminology)

Plan Before Creating

  • Sketch industry structure on paper

  • List asset types to include

  • Define classification levels needed

  • Consider using AI Setup Wizard

Consistent Naming

  • Use organization's existing terminology

  • Match industry standards where applicable

  • Keep names under 50 characters for readability

After Creating Industry

Next configuration steps:

  1. Create Classification Levels (See: Classifications)

    • Define hierarchy (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3)

    • Name each level (Type, Category, Model)

  2. Create Classification Values (See: Classifications)

    • Add values for each level

    • Link parent-child relationships

  3. Define Attributes (See: Attributes)

    • Add custom fields

    • Choose appropriate data types

  4. Set as Default (optional)

    • Open Asset Setup

    • Set Default Industry Code

    • New assets pre-filled with this industry

  5. Create Assets (See: Asset Management)

    • Start creating assets

    • Assign to this industry

    • Use classification values
